The largest municipal utility in the US has partnered with EnergyHub to deploy a bring-your-own-thermostat (BYOT) demand response programme.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and EnergyHub will enroll over 16,000 thermostats in the demand response programme.

The aim is to deliver 25MW of demand response capacity by the end of 2021.

Since launching, the programme has enrolled over 16,274 smart thermostats. Power Savers participating customers offset the peak demand by an average of 9MW for each demand response event.

The project enables LADWP to harness flexibility from HVAC systems to manage system-wide and localised peaks, contributing to immediate grid health and long-term emissions goals.

LADWP will leverage EnergyHub’s distributed energy resources management platform to address regional distribution constraints, contributing to their climate goals as part of the Power Savers initiative, which launched this June and runs through October.

The demand response programme is for residential and small business electric customers to help lower and manage their energy costs, while reducing strain on the power grid during periods of high energy demand.

The programme supports LADWP’s Clean Grid LA initiative by providing a clean energy alternative to using natural gas “peaker” plants to maintain reliability when energy use spikes.

Jason Rondou, director of clean grid LA Strategy at LADWP, said: “EnergyHub’s platform allows us to build and manage a BYOT resource that can provide grid support and help us meet our long-term emissions goals.

“The combination of EnergyHub’s expertise in running successful BYOT programmes with the capabilities of the Mercury DERMS platform puts us in the best position to achieve LADWP’s goals.”
